To control access to specific subdirectories within your account, you can add password-protection. With password-protection, users are required to enter a username and password to gain access to the contents of the protected directory.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You should never password-protect your main www subdirectory. This will make your entire web site unviewable and may have other unintended consequences. You should only password- protect subdirectories of the www directory.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: You should never password-protect your cgi-bin directory. This will prevent many things from working properly (like MivaScript, PHP, your control panel, etc.) You should only password-protect subdirectories of your cgi-bin directory.

Your WebControl panel simplifies the process by providing a convenient means to password-protect your directories.

  1. Select "Site Manager" from your control panel's left navigation bar.
  2. Check the radio button next to the subdirectory that you want to password protect.
  3. Click the "Protect" button.

That will bring up the Password Protect Directory dialogue box:

To add additional users, simply repeat the process. After you enter the first user, the Password Protect Directories dialogue will display all authorized users for the directory. You can delete users and/or change passwords for users by selecting the appropriate user and entering the information required.

After completing this step, anyone who browses http://yourdomain.com/mydir will receive the password authentication dialogue. Anyone attempting to browse that directory without a valid username and password will receive an "Authentication Failed" error message.

The password protection function of your WebControl panel uses the standard .htaccess and .htpasswd password protection method. If you wish, you can edit the .htaccess file directly to incorporate other functions. You can also still password protect directories the old fashioned way by using the htpasswd command from telnet.
