E-mail redirects are a powerful feature of your account. E-mail redirects allow you to have a large number of e-mail "addresses" without the need for unique POP accounts. Redirects will automatically foward any name you choose to up to four different POP accounts (if you need it to go to more than four POPs, use a MailList instead.)

"Catch-all" aliasing is another feature of your account. With e-mail aliasing, e-mail sent to any e-mail address at your domain name will automatically be forwarded to your default e-mail address.

If you want to turn off the aliasing feature (that is, you only want to receive mail addressed to an established POP or redirect -- all other mail will "bounce" back to the sender with an error message), change the "Forward To" field associated with the "default" e-mail forward to: unknown_user@mydomain.com.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

The following are some key considerations to keep in mind when setting up your redirects. Any deviations will result in errors throughout your e-mail system.

  • The "Forward To" entry in your "default" box must be either your primary account login (mydomain@mydomain.com, where "mydomain.com" is your domain name) or unknown_user@mydomain.com (if you want to turn off catch-all aliasing.)

  • Your redirects may not have the same name as your POP accounts or maillists. You cannot redirect a POP account or a maillist.

  • Redirects must be forwarded to a true POP account -- you cannot redirect to a redirect.

If you want to redirect all e-mail not addressed to an established POP account or redirect, add a a redirect for "mydomain" where "mydomain" is your domain name without the TLD extension (e.g., .com, .net., etc.) In the example below, all e-mail sent to any mydomain.com address will be automatically forwarded to me@aol.com.

To add redirects, simply type the name of the redirect (without the "@" or domain name) in the "Address" column, and type the POP e-mail account that will receive the redirected mail in the "Forward To" column. Redirects may be forwarded to up to four POP e-mail accounts (to forward to more than that, consider using a MailList instead.)

For example, assume that we want to turn aliasing on with all aliased e-mail being forwarded to fred@aol.com and to mary@mindspring.net, we want mail sent to support@yourdomain.com to be forwarded to fred@aol.com and to mary@mindspring.net, and we want mail sent billing@yourdomain.com to be forwarded to accountant@mylocalisp.net. We'd add the information as below and then click the "Add/Edit Redirects" button. After submitting, we'll receive a page that summarizes all of our redirects.

Don't worry about filling up all of your available redirect boxes. Additional boxes appear as you use the initial "allocation".

Please allow up to 15 minutes after adding a redirect for the redirect to begin functioning.

Manual Editing

Your e-mail forwarding setup is saved in a plain text file named .redirect located in your account's home directory. You can edit this file manually through shell using one of the standard Unix text editors; or you can download it to your local computer for editing in any standard text editor. If you download it, be sure to upload it in ASCII format when you replace it.
